‘Sajlen Disko’, or Silent Emma. She sees, thinks, feels – but does not react

Violence, hate, deliberate ignoring, mockery. These are just a few of the issues addressed by the latest production of the Banialuka Puppet Theatre in Bielsko-Biała – ‘Sajlen Disko’.

“The idea behind it was to create a performance that would respond to the emotional needs and problems of today’s youth. We started from thinking about issues related to violence, classmates, and crowds that are capable of ostracising, ignoring, and hating someone. We thought about agency, because young people can set everything up the way they want on their smartphones or computers, but in real life they feel helpless, powerless, and lacking agency. Our performance is meant to show that agency is possible, it’s just a matter of courage and moving forward”, says Jacek Popławski, Banialuka Director.

Within the ‘TooWhat’ project focusing on health prophylactics in children and youths, which became the inspiration for the performance, Grupa Kęty together with the City of Bielsko-Biała and ‘Run With Maja’ Foundation organised 15 special shows of the play for the youths of Bielsko-Biała schools. The event will be supported by a psychologist who – after the performance – will discuss the issues raised.
