In 2019, the World Bicycle Day falls on June the 3rd (Monday).
The bike is one of the most popular means of transport, used anywhere in the world. It is not surprising, therefore, that it has its own festival, but for many people it may be a surprise that the originator of this project was a Pole.
The World Bicycle Day was established by the United Nations on April 12, 2018 – the date was chosen on June 3. The person who managed to enter this date into the calendar of unusual holidays is Leszek Sibilski. This is a former cyclist of the Polish Olympic team and a professor of sociology at Montgomery College in Rockville from Jarocin. Our compatriot ran a campaign promoting the UN resolution to enact the World Cycling Day – in this way it won the support of over 50 countries. The project was officially reported by Turkmenistan at the UN forum.
The goal of the holiday is to promote the bike as an inexpensive, reliable and ecological means of transport. According to statistics, cycling can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by a tenth. This vehicle also allows you to care for health and connects people. Common cycling trips, whether it’s family or friends, is a great way to spend your free time. The World Bike Day is also a holiday that is addressed to politicians, institutions and people responsible for building bicycle paths, road safety or tourism. The bike can be involved in an interesting way into regional, national and international development programs. Everyone will benefit.
